Your first solo backpacking trip is equal parts thrilling and terrifying — mostly thrilling once the plane lands. Southeast Asia remains the world's kindest classroom for independent travel: cheap, social, safe, and strung with a banana-pancake trail of hostels built for meeting people.

The classic first route (3–4 weeks)

Bangkok → Chiang Mai → slow boat to Luang Prabang → Hanoi → Ha Long Bay → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City → Bali. It's popular because it works: short hops, endless company, and scenery that changes every three days.

Money, safety, and the unglamorous stuff

  • Budget $30–45 a day: $8–12 dorm bed, $1–3 street meals, and slow buses over flights.
  • Arrive in new cities before dark, screenshot your hostel address offline, and keep passport scans in your email.
  • Buy insurance that covers motorbikes — or better, skip the motorbike until you've taken a lesson.
"You will never be as alone as you fear, nor as independent as you hope. Both turn out to be wonderful."

How to actually meet people

Stay in social hostels with common rooms, join the free walking tour on day one, and say yes to the group boat trip even when you're tired. The friends you make over a $5 pad thai in Chiang Mai will reroute your entire itinerary — let them.

And when you need a break from people, take it guilt-free. A hammock, a coconut, and a paperback afternoon is also the trip.
